Here are several updates from around the school:

PTSA Meeting TONIGHT, 7 pm: Following a short business meeting, Mrs. Lesser will present information about the library and many of the resources available to your students (such as online databases). Please join us and learn about the WHS Library!

Hearing and Vision Screening volunteers needed: Volunteers are needed for hearing and vision screenings on Tuesday, October 7th and Wednesday, October 8th. No experience needed and various shifts are available. Please sign up at: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/whsbulldog

Reflections Contest: “The World Would Be A Better Place If…” is this year’s Reflections Contest theme. Reflections is a chance for students to create original works of art in the categories of dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts. Membership Drawings: Everyone who joins the PTSA by October 6th will be entered into a drawing for a new Kindle Fire HD! All students who join by October 6th will also be entered into a drawing for a Turbo Tutoring SAT/ACT Test Prep Class! 7.
7. Back to School Night Bulldog Café – volunteers needed for 9/30: Once again this year, the Bulldog Café will be open for teachers, parents and students before and during both back to school nights. It’s in the cafeteria and offerings include Subway and Domino’s meal deals. Parent and student volunteers are needed. 9. Honor Society Informational Meeting- October 6th at 2:20 in the auditorium – For Students: Late buses will be running that day. Society sponsors and officers of the groups will be present to answer questions about application and membership requirements. Currently, the following societies will be represented: Art, History, Marketing, National Honor Society, Science (mandatory attendance to join NSHS), and Spanish. The groups have different criteria for membership as well as the application process. Several of these are posted on the school web site: http://www.fcps.edu/WestfieldHS/students/honorsocieties/honorsocieties.html Some applications are posted on line. Also on the website, there is a link that informs students/parents of various WHS activities that require the documentation of volunteer hours. This is good to view for planning purposes, is subject to change and may only be a partial list. Questions? Students should contact the specific subject sponsor. Most students are not eligible to join honor societies until their junior year; some societies may have academic class prerequisites that may allow earlier membership.
10. BITS (Bulldog Instructional Tutoring for Students) program: Resumes on October 11th.WHS student tutors are needed and students from all WHS feeder schools are invited to attend. 11. Service Learning Hours: Are you a student who needs volunteer hours?Would your student like to earn the ability to wear a black service cord on graduation day? If yes to both, students in grades 9-12 need to earn 40 documented volunteer hours during their high school years. Through volunteering, students learn about themselves, develop new skills, define their interests and build self-esteem, help the community, and build on their experience for college or future jobs. For more information about FCPS Service Learning go to: http://www.fcps.edu/is/servicelearning/hs.shtml There are many local opportunities in our community and search engines you can create a profile with to start out, such as Volunteer Match http://www.volunteermatch.org or Volunteer Fairfax www.volunteerfairfax.org. For more information, students may see Jennifer Campbell, in the Student Services office (next to the clinic), to view the volunteer binder with ongoing or current opportunities. Diane Villars, in the Career Center (next to the Lecture Hall) also has an informational bulletin board in her room.

14. Fairfax Police Safety Seminar:Saturday, October 4, 2014 from 9 am until Noon: Make the decision to Refuse To Be A Victim! FREE personal safety seminar! Through this free seminar, you will learn what you need to develop your own personal safety strategy including information about home security, automobile security, personal security, workplace security and technological security. 15. Free VIN Etching: Saturday, October 18th from Noon-4 pm: VIN Etched windows help the police detect and identify stolen vehicles. VIN Etching will take place in the parking lot of Target at 14391 Chantilly Crossing Lane, Chantilly, Virginia. Vehicles will be etched in order of arrival. VIN Etching will be cancelled due to inclement weather.
