Thank you to everyone who participated in our annual Mulch Day fund raiser for ANGP. It is a truly incredible community event! Thanks to the students, parents, and community members for the donation of time, food for volunteers and trucks. Ray Clements, head of our security staff at WHS was even present to support us, as was Tim Thomas, along with his son Dylan (9th grader at Battlefield HS), who lent his muscle to help complete deliveries! We moved approximately 13,000 bags of mulch (fifteen18-wheelers' worth) to about 420 homes in eight hours!
We could not have done it without the assistance of trucks provided by Westfield families: Stalnakers (Village Landscapes), Katchmarks (Katchmarck Construction), Debell's (Clippers), Cronins (Paramount Mechanical Corporation), Lavins (A & A Moving and Storage) and Cox Farms.
We pride ourselves in the fact that the ANGP is self supporting: All funds used for the event are raised and kept separately from the regular PTSA budget and bank account.
Additional thanks go out to: Boy Scout Troop 30 of Centreville Presbyterian for providing a "Mulch Guard" on Friday night; the Kings of Sully Station Rita's Ice Cream, who provided a treat for everyone; and Elena Howard, Scarlett Swan, Lori Dennis and the WHS Crew parents/students who spread mulch. Kudos to Ben Campbell, CJ Fiala and Brad Gross, who let us tap into their reserve strength on the Sunday after the event to handle some missed deliveries.
Our final thanks goes to Mary Coleman for her calm, steadfast leadership in heading up the entire event, including the arrival of the mulch trucks a couple of hours early, during dismissal time! When you see them, please thank Veronica Delaney, Alana Heng, Kay Leon, Aimee Lowry, Mike Novak, Judy Novak, Suzanne Olijar, Kym Sunday and Mary Rose Woodward, who contributed countless hours heading up various committees and doing lots of things last minute. Various WHS groups were present to help this year and were able to earn rewards back to their group with our new Team Incentive Program.
Now we need to do is get seniors to purchase their All Night Grad and After Prom tickets and turn in their permission forms. We also need parents to help out contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to volunteer. You don't have to be a senior parent to help out:-)
Our next day off from school will be Memorial Day, May 31st, with a 2 hour early closing on Friday, May 28th. We're looking forward to it...
Please join us for the 10th Annual Westfield High School 5K Run/Walk for Scholarships on Saturday, May 8th at 8 a.m. The race begins in the bus loop. Over $60,000 has been raised over the years to enable the PTSA to give scholarships to Westfield graduates. Money raised this year will benefit the class of 2011. Go to the WHS 5K web site for more information and 2010 5K Scholarship Registration Form. Registration is available from 6:30 am to 7:30 am on the day of the event. I've been informed by our language department that the Pilot Program for our Language Lab, housed on the 2nd floor of the R wing, is ending and we may lose it due to funding running out. If anyone has any ideas about how to save our language lab through pursuing a grant, and wants to help out, please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Please let me know if you'd like to step up for a committee position or know of someone who would. Several of these "jobs" can be done any time of day or night because they involve behind the scenes computer work; Silent Auction would start soon as we need several people to solicit donations over the summer months from the local community. The majority of us on the PTSA Committee Roster have full or part time jobs, so it is possible to work and volunteer. What better place to do it than where your kids are? It is also a great place to meet other parents and find out what's going on at school or in the community. Chuck Saylors, our National PTA President, says "being a leader at any level shows true commitment to your school, your community and yourself... (we) need leadership as a voice to those who make decisions and as a source of positive examples to serve as a guide to others." Since our last PTSA meeting, we've reviewed and approved 8 funding requests totaling approximately $2,000, with a few more requests in the pipeline. Money raised from the SAT Practice test in March will help us fulfill additional requests.
Important reminder for May: May 24 through June 11 is the SOL Testing Window. This is a change from any dates previously posted due to make-up snow dates. The main testing dates will be May 24, 25, 26, 27 and June 1, 2, 3. Advanced Placement tests take place the first two weeks of May.
Report cards went out on April 19th and Honor Roll recognitions will follow shortly. Good luck to your students in the last academic quarter of the year. Our next PTSA meeting is Thursday, May 20, 7pm in the library. The last day of school is officially Thursday, June 24.
As always, contact me with any issues or questions. Thanks!
Jennifer Campbell
