Wednesday, November 5th, 7pm, at Centreville Presbyterian Church, (Route 29) "The Bong Show"
Dear Community Members~
Mark your calendars to attend an upcoming free parent program offered by the Westfield Community Coalition and the Westfield PTSA in conjunction with Centreville and Chantilly Community Coalitions. A popular program for over the past 6 years, Trends of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Substance Used by Our Youth, or referred to by enthusiastic parent attendees as the "The Bong Show", because it shows parents paraphernalia, will be held on Wednesday, November 5th, 7pm, at Centreville Presbyterian Church, (Route 29) ,Centreville, VA 20120.
Leslie J. Churn, MA, Student Assistance Program and Alcohol and Drug Services Counselor, along with her colleagues, Karen Chase of Chantilly High School, and Leslie Roberts of Centreville High, Mountain View, and Liberty Middle School, will address current trends of dangerous and illegal substances being used by students who attend our schools and live in our community. Suggestions as to how parents can be alerted to substance use by their children and their peers will be discussed and treatment resources will be provided. The presentation will include a recently updated power point presentation, presentation by a detective for Fairfax County Police Department Organized Crime and Narcotics Division, a large display of alcohol and drug of paraphernalia, and will allow time for ample discussion and answers.
The program is intended for adults only, but is open to adults in the surrounding communities. The Westfield Community Coalition's goal is to provide parent education, awareness and prevention services for our youth. Projects the WCC has supported this past year include: an advice column in the WHS Watchdog, WHS ANGP, Chris Skinner student assembly at WHS, Saturday Night in the Suburbs- a parent education night with a student panel, 3 parent education meetings for the elementary level feeder schools, Red Ribbon Week, Power Team- Stone Middle School outreach to 4th grade students, "Prom Notes"- elementary school children wrote congratulatory notes with prevention messages to high school students attending prom, Fairfax County wide initiative to reduce underage drinking - "Parents Who Host, Lose the Most". The intent is to bring more programs to the community for parenting our teens.
