December 2011
Welcome back to the beginning of a new school year! The PTSA has been busy this summer working to plan parent programs , plan the Bulldog BBQ and prepare for back to school. Our theme is “Parents are KEY to Bulldog Success”. We are planning our parent programs around this theme.
We have printed magnets with the theme so you can have a reminder on your refrigerator. The magnets will be available at freshman parent night, the Bulldog BBQ and Back to School Nights. We have also placed a supply of the magnets in the office. Please feel free to help yourself to a magnet. The magnet includes the website links for the school and for the PTSA along with two phone numbers for the school; the main number and the absentee phone number. Both the WHS and PTSA web sites contain a lot of valuable information. We encourage to explore both of these web sites and to seek the information.
Take a moment as the school year begins and join the PTSA. Your membership will help us accomplish our goals. By joining you will receive our monthly E-Bulletin and will receive the most up to date information about the goings-on at Westfield.
This year we have supported the school as we begin our first ever virtual opening for student packages.
To save resources all information for back to school will be available on the WHS web site. Parents can simply follow the links to the documents, print them and fill them out and return them to the school with your child. Our PTSA forms such as our membership form and All Night Grad party ticket purchase form are available on our webpage in both pdf format and electronic format. The electronic registration even includes a PayPal option should you so choose. Also our membership registration for the Minority Achievement Committee is electronic on our web page.
As you return to the school for the Bulldog BBQ you will notice how pristine our grounds look. Thanks to Beth Tweddle for her hard work to trim the trees and remove the weeds. Beth had a crew of volunteers helping her with this huge task. You truly do not realize how large the school grounds are until you begin removing weeds and trimming trees on the property. We are also grateful to RulyScapes for their hard work mulching the school grounds. Everything looks so nice. Thank you!
Marjorie Willard and Chuck Cowell have been busy all summer planning all the details for a successful Bulldog BBQ. Thank you both for all your efforts and time! The BBQ is a huge event and requires a lot of coordination of many different groups within the school.
During the Bulldog BBQ, the silent auction is one of the few fund raising events the PTSA has. It is critical to our ability as the “academic boosters” of the school to help students and teachers. As the school budgets continue to shrink we find ourselves being asked to support teachers and students in many different ways. The funds we raise with the Silent Auction help us to meet the many requests we receive. We are grateful to Jenet Ahn for chairing our silent auction during the Bulldog BBQ. She was supported by her team which includes Becky Martin, Cathy Lowrey, Cara Dobbins, Joy Lynch, Lori Nelson and Priscilla Branch. This year for our silent auction we are not only asking for donations from our local community but we also have joined with Art Gose , president of 3 Links. Mr. Gose will provide several professionally framed specialty items for parents to bid on.
I also want to thank several very supportive community businesses. Virginia Commerce Bank in Chantilly has donated an iPad 2 , PNC Bank in Sully Station has donated 2 Kindles and M & T Bank donated an ipod shuffle to the PTSA. All of these items will be raffled at our Bulldog BBQ.
Our volunteer coordinators, Cathy Pisarcik and Kelly Roberts Estep are using Sign up Genius for all of our volunteer needs this year. As we have volunteer needs, we will include a link to the Sign up Genius site. Please volunteer and help out. Not only do you have the opportunity to meet a lot of other parents, but you also have the opportunity to help our children and teachers in many different ways. The fall is our “busy season” for volunteer needs, so we will have many opportunities for you to join us and be part of Westfield.
Our next PTSA meeting will be September 29, 2011 at 7:00 pm in the school library. I hope to see you there.
