President's Message

April 2016

Hello Families,

I first want to share my sadness at the loss of one of our brilliant teachers, Mike Greiner, who passed away last weekend.

Mr. Greiner taught English at Westfield High School, Lake Braddock Secondary School and West Springfield High School. He was devoted to his students and his love of teaching showed in everything he did. He picked the perfect profession as he was inspired to share his knowledge and help others throughout his life. He was also actively involved in his community as a basketball coach, debate coach, and neighborhood and church volunteer.

The PTSA extends our deepest sympathy to Mr. Greiner's family and friends. He touched many lives during his time at Westfield and we are grateful for all he stood for and did for our community. He will be greatly missed.

Now for PTSA Info:

Join us for the next parent/ student program on April 14 at 7pm in the lecture hall: What’s Next? How to navigate through HS and get into college, what is important, what is not.

The panel of speakers will be Westfield Alumni from many different years including the first graduating class.  These alumnae will talk about what they did to get into college, what they wish they might have done in HS and what successes they had.  We will open it up to questions.  Please join us to hear these Alumnae share their stories.

Our presentation Saturday night in the Suburbs- was very well attended by parents, if you were not able to attend you missed an eye opening talk.  I am extremely grateful to the 17 Seniors who came and shared what they are seeing in the high school community, they gave advice and perspective to the parents of younger students.  I am also extremely grateful to Harry Van Trees and the Westfield Business Owners Association who sponsored this event.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:
Our biggest fundraiser of the year- mulch sale- helps support the All Night Grad Party, Scholarships, Teacher mini-grants and the other events and things we do to support Westfield HS students and staff.  Mulch Sale is April 8 and 9

We need support for the mulch sale Mulch Day Volunteer Sign Ups continue! Students and Adults are needed to help with this huge community volunteer effort! Please sign up today and help on April 8th (afternoon) and/or April 9th (all day)! Students earn volunteer hours, prizes and credit for teams/clubs! And, food, etc. donations are needed please!

We have many opportunities and events to get involved with the PTSA, Westfield HS and to meet new people:

  1. Consider joining the All Night Grad Party committee to help plan the party for this year’s seniors, we are looking for underclass parents to help do the planning so Senior parents can enjoy the day with their children. Next meeting  4/14 Room A101
    2. Like accounting?  Like being in the middle of activities? Consider a role as treasurer on the PTSA.  We are looking for someone to shadow our current Treasurer and be ready to take over at the end of the school year.
    3. Like Communications? Being creative?  The role of second VP is open.  The second VP helps with keeping the PTSA bulletin board updated with pertinent information.  Helps the president and vice president where needed at the meetings.

Class of 2016 Info

The Senior Class meeting was held on March 31st, lots of great info was disseminated to the many senior parents in attendance.  If you were unable to come to the meeting please look for the 5 page letter coming in the mail very soon.  Graduation is June 21 at 9 am in the Eagle Center (former Patriot center) Traffic is very heavy at that time, please leave early enough to arrive for start time.  George Mason officials keep the timeline very strict due to multiple graduations in one day.

Buy tickets for the All Night Grad Party before they go up in price- the good news about the party is the ticket price has dropped to 40.00.  We are excited to bring the party back to the High School so the students have a last chance to be together at the school and have fun before they go off to college.

The 2016 PTSA Scholarship applications are now available on the PTSA website and in the Career Center. The deadline is May 4th at 2:30 pm.  We encourage everyone to apply!
